About the Repertory Singers
Education and Outreach
In
2003, seeing the drastic cuts in music programs in schools throughout
the state, the singers embarked upon a new educational outreach program.
A representative group of 12 singers were selected and scheduling began
for a school visit program to local high school choral music programs.
The first year, two schools were visited (Ashland and Phoenix); the
second year, six schools were visited (districts of Grants Pass, Rogue
River, Eagle Point); and in the 2005, six schools in the region were
visited. SORS absorbs all costs related to these visits, committing
almost $4,000 to support this program each year. In most visits, the
Repsingers meet with the students of the participating school for a
one hour session during which a short concert is presented. A short
vocal lesson is provided and a question and answer period supplies
vital knowledge the participating vocal students. And, finally, the
visited site's singers are invited to join with the Repsingers to sing
several numbers. In most cases, only students that are involved with
choral music classes attend but we have peformed for the entire student
body.
Mission of the Education Outreach Program:
You
can't sing what you can't imagine, and you can't imagine what you've
never heard. Southern Oregon Repertory Singers are proud to preserve
and share the lifelong love of choral music with young choral singers.
Additionally, the Repertory Singers are pleased to serve as mentors to the Southern Oregon University Chamber Choir. In 2005, Chamber Singers joined with Repertory Singers to perform the Faure Requiem as guest artists with the Rogue Valley Symphony. The Chamber Choir has been invited to join the Repertory Singers for the Mozart Mass in C Minor in 2006.
